Latin Name: Illicium verum  |  Plant Part: Fruit  |  Origin: China  |  Extraction: Steam Distillation

Star Anise Essential Oil is one of aromatherapy's most distinctive spice oils — warm, sweet, and unmistakably liquorice-like, with a depth and richness that makes it an instant focal point in any blend. Steam distilled from the star-shaped fruits of Illicium verum grown in China, this oil is dominated by trans-anethole, the compound responsible for the characteristic aroma of anise, fennel, and liquorice.

In aromatherapy, star anise is valued for its warming, antispasmodic, and digestive-supportive properties. It pairs naturally with citrus oils like Lemon and Bergamot FCF, and adds a distinctive spiced warmth alongside Nutmeg, Coriander Seed, and Cedarwood Virginian.

  • Aroma: Warm, sweet, intensely spiced; pronounced liquorice character with soft herbal undertone.
  • Blends with: Lemon, Bergamot FCF, Nutmeg, Coriander Seed, Black Pepper, Cedarwood Virginian, Patchouli.
  • Diffusion: 2–3 drops in a 100–200 ml diffuser — potent, use sparingly.
  • Topical: Max 0.5% dilution in carrier oil — always dilute well before skin application.
  • Safety: Avoid during pregnancy. Caution with epilepsy. Not for children under 6.
