Sandalwood Amyris Essential Oil: The Ethical Alternative with Remarkable Benefits
True sandalwood (Santalum album) is one of the most prized aromatic materials in the world — and one of the most endangered. Decades of overharvesting have made genuine Indian sandalwood extraordinarily expensive and increasingly difficult to source ethically. Amyris (Amyris balsamifera) — sometimes called West Indian sandalwood or poor man’s sandalwood — offers a sustainable, affordable, and genuinely effective alternative, with a warm, creamy, balsamic scent that shares much of sandalwood’s character and many of its therapeutic properties.
What is Amyris Essential Oil?
Amyris essential oil is steam-distilled from the wood of Amyris balsamifera, a small tree native to Haiti and the Caribbean. Despite the common name “West Indian sandalwood”, amyris is botanically unrelated to true sandalwood — it belongs to the rue family (Rutaceae) rather than the sandalwood family (Santalaceae). However, its high sesquiterpene content gives it a scent and therapeutic profile that overlaps significantly with true sandalwood, making it an excellent and ethical substitute.
It is sustainably harvested from wild trees in Haiti, where it has been used in traditional medicine and perfumery for centuries. The distillation industry provides meaningful income to local communities, making amyris one of the more ethically sound choices in aromatherapy.
The Scent Profile
Amyris has a warm, soft, creamy-woody scent with balsamic, slightly sweet undertones. It is less complex and less intensely woody than true sandalwood — softer and more approachable — but shares the same fundamental character: grounding, warm, and deeply comforting. It is an outstanding base note in blends, adding depth, longevity, and a creamy warmth that rounds and softens other oils.
Benefits of Amyris Essential Oil
Grounding and meditation
Like true sandalwood, amyris has a deeply grounding, centring quality that makes it one of the finest oils for meditation, breathwork, and spiritual practice. Its high sesquiterpene content promotes a calm, focused mental state — quieting mental chatter and creating the conditions for sustained inward attention. Diffuse during meditation or apply diluted to the wrists and back of the neck before practice.
Sleep support
Amyris is a gentle sedative, promoting relaxation and easing the transition into sleep. It is particularly effective for those whose sleep is disrupted by an overactive mind or low-level anxiety. It works beautifully alongside lavender and cedarwood in a pre-sleep diffuser blend.
Skin care
Amyris has genuine skin-supporting properties — it is emollient, mildly anti-inflammatory, and has been shown to have antioxidant activity. It is particularly beneficial for dry, mature, and sensitive skin, where its creamy, nourishing quality helps restore suppleness and calm irritation. Add 2–3 drops to a facial oil or body moisturiser.
Stress and anxiety relief
Amyris’s grounding, warming quality makes it effective for stress and anxiety — particularly the kind of scattered, unmoored anxiety that benefits from being brought back into the body. It is less immediately impactful than frankincense or bergamot for acute anxiety, but works beautifully as a sustained background support — diffused throughout the day or applied topically as part of a daily ritual.
Natural perfumery
Amyris is one of the most useful base notes in natural perfumery. Its creamy, balsamic warmth extends the life of a blend, softens sharp top notes, and adds a depth and sensuality that is difficult to achieve with other materials. It is a key ingredient in many natural perfume formulations and an excellent starting point for anyone exploring natural fragrance creation.
How to Use Amyris Essential Oil
Diffuser
Add 4–6 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser. Amyris works beautifully alone or as the base of a blend. Ideal for meditation, evening wind-down, and creating a warm, grounding atmosphere.
Topical Application (skin care)
Add 2–3 drops to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil (jojoba, rosehip, or argan work particularly well). Apply to the face as a serum or to the body as a nourishing oil. Particularly effective for dry, mature, or sensitive skin.
Meditation and Breathwork
Dilute 2–3 drops in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil and apply to the wrists, back of the neck, and temples before meditation. The scent acts as an anchor for the practice — over time, the association between the scent and the meditative state deepens.
Pre-Sleep Ritual
Apply diluted to the soles of the feet and wrists 30 minutes before bed. Combine with a few drops diffused in the bedroom for a comprehensive pre-sleep environment.
Natural Perfume Base
Use amyris as the base note in a personal perfume blend — it extends the life of the fragrance and adds warmth and depth. Start with 40% base notes (amyris, cedarwood, or frankincense), 40% middle notes (lavender, geranium, or ylang ylang), and 20% top notes (bergamot, lemon, or peppermint).
