Amyris essential oil, commonly referred to as West Indian Sandalwood oil, features a scent closely resembling that of true sandalwood. It is produced through steam distillation of the bark and branches of the Amyris balsamifera tree. Due to its substantial oil content, the wood naturally burns like a candle, earning it the local name "candle wood." This oil serves as a more affordable substitute for authentic sandalwood, offering similar aromatic qualities.
This oil has long been used to cleanse wounds and treat influenza and diarrhoea. It is known for its ability to ease cystitis and vaginal infections effectively. When used in a diffuser, it helps calm anxiety and tension, improves sleep, and acts as a natural aphrodisiac to enhance intimacy. Additionally, it supports relief from coughs, colds, and bronchitis. Its soothing qualities aid meditation, while its muscle-relaxing and moisturizing effects offer extra comfort.
The botanical origin of the tree yielding this oil was unknown until 1886 when the main differences between this plant and true sandalwood were identified by microscopic examination of the leaves. The Amyris balsamifera tree grows wild in Haiti. For their healing and aromatic properties, essential oils were considered more valuable than gold to ancient humans.
