Frankincense Essential Oil: Sacred Oil, Modern Uses
Frankincense has been burned, traded, and treasured for over five thousand years. It was carried along ancient trade routes, offered in temples, and used by healers across Egypt, Arabia, and India. Today, it remains one of the most sought-after essential oils in aromatherapy — and for good reason. Its benefits are as relevant now as they were in antiquity.
What is Frankincense Essential Oil?
Frankincense essential oil is steam-distilled from the resin of Boswellia trees, a genus of hardy, drought-resistant trees native to the arid regions of Oman, Somalia, Ethiopia, and India. When the bark is scored, the tree weeps a milky-white sap that hardens into golden resin tears — the raw material for both incense and essential oil.
There are several Boswellia species, each producing a subtly different oil:
- Boswellia carterii — the most widely used; warm, balsamic, slightly citrusy
- Boswellia sacra — considered the finest grade; sweeter and more complex
- Boswellia serrata — the Indian variety; earthier and more medicinal in character
At Vivid Aromas, our frankincense resin comes via Prinknash Abbey in Gloucestershire — a Benedictine monastery with centuries of incense-making tradition. That same resin heritage informs the quality of our frankincense oil.
The Scent Profile
Frankincense has a warm, woody, balsamic base with subtle citrus top notes and a faintly sweet, resinous depth. It is grounding without being heavy, and complex without being overpowering. It blends exceptionally well with other oils and acts as a natural fixative — helping other scents last longer.
Benefits of Frankincense Essential Oil
Grounding and stress relief
Frankincense is one of the most effective oils for calming an overactive mind. Its primary active compound, incensole acetate, has been shown in research to activate ion channels in the brain that reduce anxiety and promote feelings of warmth and calm. It slows and deepens the breath — almost involuntarily — making it ideal for moments of stress or overwhelm.
Sleep support
Used in the hour before bed, frankincense helps quiet mental chatter and ease the transition into sleep. It works particularly well in combination with lavender and cedarwood. See our Essential Oils for Sleep and Relaxation guide for blend ideas.
Meditation and mindfulness
There is a reason frankincense has been burned in places of worship for millennia. Its aroma naturally encourages slower, deeper breathing and a sense of stillness. Whether you practise formal meditation or simply want to create a more intentional atmosphere, frankincense is unmatched. Skin support (topical use)
Frankincense has long been used in skincare for its reputed ability to support cell regeneration and reduce the appearance of fine lines. When diluted correctly in a carrier oil, it can be applied to the face and body. Always dilute to 1–2% (1–2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil) and patch test first.
Immune and respiratory support
Diffused during the colder months, frankincense is traditionally used to support respiratory health and general immunity. Its anti-inflammatory properties are well-documented in research relating to Boswellia extracts.
How to Use Frankincense Essential Oil
Diffuser
Add 4–6 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser. Frankincense works beautifully on its own or as part of a blend. Run for 30–60 minutes — it's potent enough that you don't need to overdo it.
Topical Application
Dilute 2 drops in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, or rosehip all work well). Apply to pulse points, the back of the neck, or as part of a facial oil routine.
Inhalation
Add 2–3 drops to a bowl of steaming water, drape a towel over your head, and inhale slowly for 5–10 minutes. Particularly effective for respiratory support and stress relief.
Meditation Ritual
Diffuse frankincense 10 minutes before you begin your practice to allow the scent to settle in the room. Pair with our Prinknash Abbey resin incense for a full sensory experience.
Blending Guide
Frankincense is one of the most versatile blending oils. It acts as a bridge between top and base notes and enhances the longevity of lighter oils.
Blends well with: lavender, sandalwood, cedarwood, myrrh, bergamot, ylang ylang, rose, lemon, orange, patchouli

A Note on Quality
Not all frankincense oils are equal. Look for oils that clearly state the Boswellia species, country of origin, and extraction method. Avoid oils labelled simply "fragrance oil" or "frankincense blend" — these are synthetic and carry none of the therapeutic properties of a genuine steam-distilled essential oil. Our guide to choosing quality essential oils covers what to look for in detail.
