Cedarwood Essential Oil: The Grounding Oil for Sleep, Calm, and Focus

Cedarwood is the scent of ancient forests — warm, woody, and deeply grounding. It is one of the oldest aromatic materials used by humans, with a history stretching back to Ancient Egypt, where cedarwood oil was used in embalming, perfumery, and ritual. Today it remains one of the most versatile and underrated essential oils in aromatherapy — equally effective for promoting deep sleep, easing anxiety, sharpening focus, and supporting hair health.

What is Cedarwood Essential Oil?

Cedarwood essential oil is steam-distilled from the wood, bark, and sometimes leaves of several species of cedar tree. The two most commonly used in aromatherapy are:

  • Cedrus atlantica (Atlas Cedarwood) — distilled from the Atlas cedar of Morocco and Algeria; warm, sweet, and balsamic; the most widely used in aromatherapy and perfumery
  • Juniperus virginiana (Virginian Cedarwood) — distilled from the Eastern red cedar of North America; slightly drier and more camphoraceous than Atlas; excellent for grounding and insect-repelling applications

Both are effective for aromatherapy use. Atlas cedarwood is generally considered the finer oil for emotional and sleep applications; Virginian cedarwood is excellent for grounding, hair care, and as a natural insect repellent.

The Scent Profile

Cedarwood has a warm, dry, woody base note with a slightly sweet, balsamic quality and faint smoky undertones. It is deeply grounding and comforting — one of the most universally appealing scents in aromatherapy, and one of the most effective base notes in natural perfumery.

Benefits of Cedarwood Essential Oil

Sleep and relaxation
Cedarwood is one of the most effective essential oils for sleep. Its primary active compound, cedrol, has been shown in research to have sedative properties — reducing heart rate and promoting the kind of deep physiological calm that precedes sleep. A 2015 study found that cedrol inhalation significantly reduced heart rate and increased parasympathetic nervous system activity. Diffuse in the bedroom 30–60 minutes before sleep, or apply diluted to the soles of the feet. It pairs beautifully with lavender and frankincense for a comprehensive sleep blend.

Anxiety and stress relief
Cedarwood’s grounding, earthy quality makes it particularly effective for anxiety that feels unmoored or scattered — the kind of anxious energy that makes it hard to feel settled in your own body. It works by activating the limbic system and promoting the release of serotonin, which is then converted to melatonin — explaining its dual effectiveness for both anxiety and sleep. See our Crystals for Anxiety guide for complementary crystal pairings.

Focus and mental clarity
Counterintuitively for a sedative oil, cedarwood at lower concentrations can actually improve focus and attention — particularly for the kind of scattered, distracted thinking that comes with stress or overwhelm. A 2016 study found that cedarwood oil improved focus and reduced hyperactivity in children with ADHD. It works particularly well in a focus blend alongside rosemary and frankincense.

Hair growth and scalp health
Cedarwood is one of the most effective essential oils for hair loss and scalp health. A landmark 1998 study in Archives of Dermatology found that a blend including cedarwood, lavender, and rosemary significantly improved hair growth in patients with alopecia areata after seven months of daily scalp massage. Cedarwood stimulates the hair follicles, improves circulation to the scalp, and has antifungal properties that help address dandruff and scalp conditions.

Natural insect repellent
Cedarwood (particularly Virginian) is a well-documented natural insect repellent. It is effective against moths, mosquitoes, and other insects — making it a useful addition to homemade repellent sprays and a natural alternative to synthetic moth repellents in wardrobes.

How to Use Cedarwood Essential Oil

Diffuser

Add 4–6 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser. Ideal for evenings, bedrooms, and meditation spaces. Cedarwood is one of the few oils that works well diffused continuously at low levels throughout the night.

Topical Application (sleep)

Dilute 3 drops in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil and apply to the soles of the feet, the back of the neck, or the wrists before bed. The soles of the feet are particularly effective — the large pores absorb the oil quickly and the reflexology points connect to the whole body.

Scalp Treatment (hair growth)

Dilute 5 drops cedarwood, 5 drops rosemary, and 3 drops lavender in 2 tablespoons of carrier oil (jojoba or coconut). Massage into the scalp for 5 minutes daily. Leave for at least 30 minutes then shampoo out. Consistent daily use for several months is required for meaningful results.

Wardrobe Protection

Add 5–10 drops to a small piece of untreated wood or a cotton wool ball and place in wardrobes and drawers. Refresh every few weeks. An effective and pleasant-smelling alternative to synthetic moth repellents.
