Lavender Essential Oil: The Complete Guide
Lavender is where most people begin their aromatherapy journey — and for good reason. It is the most researched, most versatile, and most widely used essential oil in the world. Calming yet uplifting, gentle enough for most skin types, and effective across a remarkable range of applications, lavender is the one oil that genuinely earns its place in every home.
What is Lavender Essential Oil?
Lavender essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowering tops of Lavandula plants. There are several varieties, and the differences matter:
- Lavandula angustifolia (True Lavender) — the gold standard for therapeutic use; sweet, floral, and gently herbaceous. Grown at altitude, it has the highest linalool content and the softest scent
- Lavandin (Lavandula x intermedia) — a hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender; stronger, more camphoraceous, and less suited to relaxation. Often used in cleaning products and cheaper blends
- Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia) — more stimulating than calming; higher in camphor; better suited to respiratory support than sleep
When buying lavender oil for aromatherapy, always look for Lavandula angustifolia — ideally with the country of origin stated (France, Bulgaria, and the UK all produce excellent crops).
The Scent Profile
True lavender has a soft, sweet, floral scent with gentle herbaceous and slightly woody undertones. It is clean and familiar without being cloying. Unlike many essential oils, lavender sits comfortably in both top and middle note positions, making it one of the easiest oils to blend with.
Benefits of Lavender Essential Oil
Stress and anxiety relief
Lavender's calming properties are among the most well-documented in aromatherapy research. Its primary compounds — linalool and linalyl acetate — interact with GABA receptors in the brain, producing a measurable anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effect. A 2014 clinical trial found that an oral lavender preparation was as effective as lorazepam for generalised anxiety disorder. Diffused or inhaled, the effect is gentler but still meaningful.
Sleep support
Lavender is the most effective single oil for sleep. Multiple studies confirm it reduces sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep), improves sleep quality, and increases time in deep sleep. Diffuse in the bedroom 30 minutes before sleep, or add 2 drops to your pillow. See our Essential Oils for Sleep and Relaxation guide for full blend recommendations.
Skin support
Lavender is one of the few essential oils considered safe for cautious neat application to small areas of skin — though dilution is always recommended for regular use. It is widely used for minor burns, insect bites, and skin irritation, and has well-established antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Diluted in a carrier oil, it makes an excellent addition to a facial or body oil routine.
Headache and tension relief
Applied diluted to the temples and back of the neck, lavender is a well-established remedy for tension headaches. A 2012 study in European Neurology found that inhaled lavender oil significantly reduced headache severity in migraine sufferers.
Mood and emotional balance
Beyond anxiety, lavender has a gentle uplifting quality that makes it useful for low mood, emotional fatigue, and moments of overwhelm. It is neither sedating nor stimulating at moderate doses — simply balancing.
How to Use Lavender Essential Oil
Diffuser
Add 5–8 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser. Lavender works beautifully alone or as the backbone of almost any blend. Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices.
Topical Application
Dilute 2–3 drops in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil (sweet almond, jojoba, or coconut all work well). Apply to pulse points, temples, or anywhere on the body. For a facial oil, use rosehip or jojoba as your carrier and keep dilution to 1% (1 drop per teaspoon).
Pillow Spray
Add 10 drops to 100ml of water with a teaspoon of witch hazel in a small spray bottle. Shake well and mist your pillow and bedding before sleep.
Bath
Add 6–8 drops to a tablespoon of carrier oil or full-fat milk, then add to a warm bath. Soak for 15–20 minutes. The combination of warmth and lavender is deeply restorative.
Direct Inhalation
For immediate stress relief or headache support, add 2 drops to your palms, rub together, cup over your nose and mouth, and breathe slowly for 30–60 seconds.
Blending Guide
Lavender is the most blendable oil in aromatherapy — it works with almost everything and softens harsher notes beautifully.
Blends well with: frankincense, cedarwood, bergamot, chamomile, ylang ylang, geranium, clary sage, vetiver, sandalwood, lemon, orange, peppermint, eucalyptus

Safety Notes
- Always dilute before applying to skin for regular use — neat application should be occasional and to small areas only
- Avoid use during the first trimester of pregnancy; Lavandula angustifolia is generally considered safe from the second trimester onwards, but always consult a healthcare professional
- Safe for use around children aged 2+ when properly diluted; one of the few oils suitable for a children's bedtime routine
- Keep out of reach of pets — cats in particular are sensitive to linalool

A Note on Quality
The lavender market is flooded with lavandin sold as true lavender, and synthetic lavender fragrance oils that carry none of the therapeutic properties of the real thing. Always check the Latin name (Lavandula angustifolia), the country of origin, and that the oil is 100% pure and steam-distilled. Our guide to choosing quality essential oils explains exactly what to look for on the label.
