Benzoin is one of aromatherapy's most comforting and enveloping materials — a warm, balsamic resinoid with a soft vanilla-like sweetness that wraps around a blend like a cashmere blanket. Sourced from the resin of Styrax benzoin trees grown in the Philippines and prepared by solvent extraction, benzoin is supplied diluted in dipropylene glycol (DPG) to make it workable and blendable.
In aromatherapy, benzoin is treasured as a fixative and base note — it slows the evaporation of lighter oils, extends the life of a blend, and adds a rich, grounding warmth that few other materials can replicate. It pairs beautifully with florals like Jasmine and Ylang Ylang I, orientals like Patchouli, and woods like Cedarwood Virginian.
- Aroma: Warm, balsamic, resinous; soft vanilla-like sweetness with incense depth.
- Blends with: Lavender, Bergamot FCF, Clary Sage, Patchouli, Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Cedarwood, Rosewood.
- Diffusion: 2–3 drops in a 100–200 ml diffuser; warm bottle first if viscous.
- Topical: Dilute to 1–2% in carrier oil — already in DPG but further dilution required.
- Safety: Contains ~42% benzyl benzoate — patch test essential. Avoid in pregnancy.
