Patchouli Essential Oil is derived from the Pogostemon cablin plant, a member of the mint family, recognized for its distinctive musky-sweet and spicy aroma. Native to Malaysia and India, where it is referred to as 'puchaput,' the term patchouli originates from the Tamil phrase 'pachchai ilai,' meaning 'green leaf.' The oil is obtained from young leaves that undergo drying and fermentation prior to steam distillation, a process that enhances its scent and potency over time. Highly regarded in dermatology, patchouli oil is particularly effective in supporting scar repair and skin regeneration.

In many Eastern cultures, patchouli oil is cherished for its fragrant use in potpourris and sachets placed among linens, also helping to repel bedbugs and insects. Known to balance emotions and create a romantic mood, it can soothe anxiety and depression when diffused in an oil burner. Adding it to bath water may support relief from skin and scalp issues, fungal infections, fluid retention, cellulite, and constipation. With powerful tissue-regenerating and healing properties, patchouli oil effectively combats infections and promotes recovery from acne, eczema, sores, ulcers, and athlete’s foot.

Historically, patchouli was placed between Indian cashmere shawls to protect them from moths during shipment to Victorian England, where its distinctive scent became essential for selling the shawls. In the 1960s and 70s, patchouli oil and incense gained huge popularity in Europe and America, especially among hippies, as its aroma masked body odour and the scent of burnt cannabis. It was also commonly used as a natural hair conditioner for dreadlocks. Additionally, in many Asian cultures, patchouli is valued as a traditional remedy for snakebites.
