Lemongrass Essential Oil: The Fresh, Clarifying Oil for Energy, Pain, and Purification

Lemongrass is one of the most recognisable scents in the world — familiar from Thai cuisine, spa treatments, and natural cleaning products alike. Its essential oil is equally versatile: a powerful antibacterial and antifungal agent, an effective insect repellent, a genuine pain reliever, and one of the most energising and clarifying oils in aromatherapy. It is also one of the most affordable high-quality essential oils available, making it an excellent choice for everyday use.

What is Lemongrass Essential Oil?

Lemongrass essential oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and stalks of Cymbopogon citratus (West Indian lemongrass) or Cymbopogon flexuosus (East Indian lemongrass). Both are widely used in aromatherapy, with East Indian lemongrass generally considered to have a slightly finer, more complex scent.

Its primary active compounds are citral (geranial and neral, up to 80%) — the compound responsible for its characteristic lemony scent and its powerful antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. It also contains geraniol (shared with geranium (guide) and citronella (guide)) and myrcene.

The Scent Profile

Lemongrass has a fresh, sharp, intensely lemony scent with grassy, slightly earthy undertones. It is more complex and less sweet than lemon (guide) — more tropical, more herbal, and more tenacious. It is a top-to-middle note in blends, adding brightness, freshness, and a distinctive citrus-herbal quality that is immediately energising.

Benefits of Lemongrass Essential Oil

Energy and mental clarity
Lemongrass is one of the most energising oils in aromatherapy — its sharp, bright scent activates the sympathetic nervous system and promotes alertness, focus, and mental clarity. It is particularly effective for the kind of mental fatigue and sluggishness that comes with overwork, poor sleep, or low mood. Diffuse in the morning or during work sessions for a fast-acting energy boost.

Muscle pain and inflammation
Lemongrass has well-documented analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it one of the most effective oils for muscle pain, joint pain, and sports recovery. A 2017 study confirmed its significant anti-inflammatory activity. Applied diluted in a massage oil, it penetrates deeply, reduces inflammation, and provides meaningful pain relief — particularly effective for the kind of diffuse, aching muscle pain that follows intense exercise or prolonged physical work.

Insect repellent
Lemongrass is one of the most effective natural insect repellents available — its high citral content is toxic to many insects and repels mosquitoes, flies, and other biting insects. It is often used as an alternative to citronella (guide), with a more complex and pleasant scent. Apply diluted to exposed skin before outdoor activities, or diffuse outdoors to create a repellent zone.

Antibacterial and antifungal
Lemongrass has exceptional antibacterial and antifungal properties — among the strongest of any essential oil. Multiple studies confirm its effectiveness against a wide range of bacteria and fungi, including drug-resistant strains. It is widely used in natural cleaning products, and is effective for minor skin infections, athlete's foot, and other fungal conditions when applied diluted topically.

Air purification and deodorising
Lemongrass is one of the most effective oils for purifying indoor air and neutralising odours. Its antimicrobial properties reduce airborne bacteria and mould spores, while its fresh, clean scent eliminates rather than masks unpleasant odours. Diffuse in kitchens, bathrooms, and any space that benefits from air purification.

Skin care
Lemongrass has astringent, antibacterial, and pore-tightening properties that make it useful for oily and acne-prone skin. It also has antifungal properties that make it effective for scalp conditions including dandruff. Add 1–2 drops to a carrier oil for facial use, or 3–4 drops to a tablespoon of carrier oil for a scalp treatment.

Stress and anxiety relief
Lemongrass's bright, uplifting scent has genuine anxiolytic properties — a 2015 study found that lemongrass inhalation significantly reduced anxiety in human participants. It is particularly effective for the kind of nervous, wired tension that comes with overwork and mental overstimulation.

How to Use Lemongrass Essential Oil

Diffuser

Add 4–5 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser. Lemongrass works beautifully alone or blended with other citrus or herbal oils. Ideal for mornings, work sessions, cleaning days, and air purification.

Muscle Relief (topical)

Dilute 4–5 drops in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil. Massage into aching muscles or joints after exercise or physical work. Particularly effective when combined with peppermint (guide) and lavender (guide).

Insect Repellent (topical)

Natural Cleaning Spray

Add 15 drops lemongrass and 10 drops tea tree (guide) to a 500ml spray bottle with water and 2 tablespoons white vinegar. One of the most effective natural cleaning combinations available.

Scalp Treatment

Add 3–4 drops to 1 tablespoon of carrier oil (jojoba works well). Massage into the scalp, leave for 20–30 minutes, then shampoo out. Effective for dandruff and oily scalp conditions.

Direct Inhalation
