Jasmine Essential Oil: The King of Flowers for Mood, Romance, and Confidence

If ylang ylang is the queen of floral oils, jasmine is the king. It is one of the most complex, intoxicating, and emotionally powerful aromatic materials available — used in perfumery for thousands of years and revered across cultures for its ability to lift mood, inspire confidence, and create an atmosphere of romance and sensuality. It is also one of the most expensive natural aromatics in the world, which is why it is almost always sold either as an absolute or in diluted form.

What is Jasmine Essential Oil?

Jasmine is unusual in the essential oil world — it cannot be steam-distilled, because the delicate flowers are destroyed by heat before they release their aromatic compounds. Instead, jasmine is produced by solvent extraction, which yields a jasmine absolute — a highly concentrated aromatic material that is technically distinct from a steam-distilled essential oil but used in the same way in aromatherapy.

The two most commonly used species are:

  • Jasminum grandiflorum (Royal Jasmine / Spanish Jasmine) — the most widely used in perfumery; rich, warm, and intensely floral with fruity undertones
  • Jasminum sambac (Arabian Jasmine) — slightly sweeter and more intensely floral; used in traditional medicine across Asia and in the production of jasmine tea

Jasmine Absolute is the pure, undiluted aromatic material — extraordinarily concentrated and expensive. A single kilogram of jasmine absolute requires approximately 8 million hand-picked flowers, harvested before dawn when the aromatic compounds are at their peak.

Jasmine Dilute is jasmine absolute pre-diluted in a carrier oil (typically jojoba) to a workable concentration — usually 3–5%. This makes it far more affordable and immediately ready to use, while retaining all the therapeutic and aromatic properties of the absolute. For most aromatherapy applications, jasmine dilute is the practical and economical choice.

The Scent Profile

Jasmine has a rich, intensely sweet, floral scent with warm, slightly fruity, and faintly animalic undertones. It is one of the most complex natural scents available — simultaneously delicate and powerful, feminine and sensual. It is a key ingredient in a vast number of the world’s most celebrated perfumes, from Chanel No. 5 to Dior J’adore.

Benefits of Jasmine Essential Oil

Mood lifting and antidepressant
Jasmine is one of the most powerful mood-lifting aromatics available. Multiple studies confirm its ability to increase positive emotions, reduce negative mood states, and promote a sense of wellbeing. A 2010 study found that jasmine inhalation significantly increased positive emotions and energy levels compared to placebo. It is particularly effective for low mood, emotional flatness, and the kind of grey, unmotivated feeling that resists other interventions.

Confidence and self-esteem
Jasmine has a unique quality among essential oils — it promotes confidence, assertiveness, and a sense of personal power. It is sometimes described as the oil of “optimism and confidence” — helping to dissolve self-doubt and create the emotional conditions for bold, decisive action. Use before important meetings, presentations, or any situation requiring confidence and presence.

Romance and sensuality
Jasmine’s reputation as an aphrodisiac is ancient and cross-cultural. In India, jasmine garlands are worn by brides; in China, jasmine tea is associated with romance and refinement. Its rich, warm, sensual scent creates an atmosphere of intimacy and desire. It pairs beautifully with ylang ylang, patchouli, and sandalwood amyris.

Anxiety and stress relief
Jasmine’s anxiolytic properties are well-documented. A 2013 study found that jasmine inhalation significantly reduced anxiety and improved mood in a clinical setting. It is particularly effective for the kind of anxious, self-critical thinking that undermines confidence and performance — working simultaneously on the anxiety and the mood, rather than just sedating.

Skin care
Jasmine absolute has genuine skin-supporting properties — it is moisturising, mildly antiseptic, and has been shown to improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. It is particularly beneficial for dry, sensitive, and mature skin. Add 1–2 drops of jasmine dilute to a facial oil or moisturiser.

Childbirth support
Jasmine has a long traditional use in supporting labour — it is believed to strengthen contractions, reduce pain, and ease anxiety during childbirth. Several studies support its use for pain relief and anxiety reduction in labour. Note: for this reason, jasmine should be avoided during pregnancy until labour begins.

How to Use Jasmine Essential Oil

Diffuser

Add 3–4 drops of jasmine dilute (or 1–2 drops of absolute) to an ultrasonic diffuser. Jasmine is potent — use sparingly and blend with other oils to balance its intensity. Ideal for romantic occasions, mood lifting, and confidence building.

Direct Inhalation

Add 1 drop of jasmine dilute to your palms, rub together, cup over your nose and mouth, and breathe slowly for 60 seconds. Fast-acting for mood lifting and confidence before challenging situations.

Topical Application (skin care)

Add 2–3 drops of jasmine dilute to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. Apply to the face as a serum or to pulse points as a personal fragrance. The combination of therapeutic benefit and beautiful scent makes jasmine dilute one of the most luxurious topical oils available.

Bath

Add 4–5 drops of jasmine dilute to a tablespoon of carrier oil or full-fat milk, then add to a warm bath. Deeply restorative for low mood, emotional exhaustion, and stress.

Personal Fragrance

Apply jasmine dilute directly to pulse points — wrists, neck, behind the ears — as a natural perfume. It is one of the few essential oils that works beautifully as a standalone fragrance, and it blends seamlessly with other oils to create complex personal scents.

Blending Guide

Jasmine is a rich, intensely floral middle-to-base note. Use sparingly — it should enhance a blend, not dominate it.

Blends well with: ylang ylang, bergamot, frankincense, clary sage, geranium, patchouli, sandalwood amyris, rose, lavender, orange, lemon

Confidence (diffuser or direct inhalation)

Romance (diffuser)

Mood Lift (diffuser)

Luxury Skin Oil (topical)

Safety Notes

  • Avoid during pregnancy — jasmine has uterine-stimulating properties and should not be used until labour begins
  • Always dilute before applying to skin — jasmine absolute is extremely concentrated
  • May cause sensitisation in some individuals — patch test before use
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets

A Note on Quality

True jasmine absolute is extraordinarily expensive — if you see jasmine essential oil at a very low price, it is almost certainly synthetic or adulterated. Look for jasmine absolute or jasmine dilute (pre-diluted in a carrier oil) from a reputable supplier who states the botanical name and country of origin. Our guide to choosing quality essential oils explains what to look for.
