Frankincense Essential Oil is steam distilled from the resin of the Boswellia carterii tree of the Burseraceae family and is also known as Olibanum, a name derived from the French franc meaning luxuriant; along with myrrh, it was among the earliest gums used as incense. Indigenous to the arid regions of the Middle East, the tree is often described as growing in a natural bonsai-like form, and frankincense has long symbolized divinity and sacredness. Highly valued for its warm, resinous aroma, the oil is popular in aromatherapy and meditation practices and is widely used in cosmetic and skincare products for toning and fragrance. In ancient Egypt, frankincense was burned as holy incense and incorporated into beauty rituals, including being ground into kohl to accentuate the eyes, a practice reflected in Egyptian art, with records of its use dating back to a 15th-century BC tomb inscription of Queen Hatshepsut.
