Latin Name: Juniperus virginiana | Plant Part: Wood | Origin: USA | Extraction: Steam Distillation
Please note: This is Virginian Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) — botanically distinct from Atlas Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica). Virginian cedarwood has a drier, crisper, pencil-shaving character with subtle smoky and balsamic undertones, compared to the warmer, creamier profile of Atlas. Both are excellent oils — but they are different, and worth choosing deliberately.
Dry, woody, and quietly grounding, Cedarwood Virginian Essential Oil is a characterful and versatile oil with deep roots in American aromatic tradition. Steam-distilled from the heartwood of Juniperus virginiana — the Eastern Red Cedar — grown across the eastern United States, this oil delivers a clean, dry, pencil-shaving aroma with warm balsamic and slightly smoky undertones. Grounding, steadying, and timelessly familiar.
The Eastern Red Cedar has been used by Native American peoples for centuries — in ceremony, for its insect-repelling properties, and as a material for sacred objects and storage chests. The distinctive aroma of cedar-lined wardrobes and pencil cases the world over traces back to this remarkable tree. Its essential oil carries that same quiet, enduring character.

Professional Use
Cedarwood Virginian is a dependable base note for professional blending — grounding, long-lasting, and easy to work with across a wide range of client needs and treatment contexts.
- Massage blends: At 1–2% in a carrier oil, Cedarwood Virginian adds warm, woody depth to grounding and relaxation massage blends. Particularly effective alongside Vetiver and Frankincense for deeply settling, anxiety-easing formulations. For scalp massage, combine with Rosemary and Lavender at 2% total in jojoba.
- Diffusion in treatment rooms: 3–4 drops in a diffuser creates a warm, grounding atmosphere well-suited to relaxation, sleep-focused, and anxiety treatments. Works well as a room-setter between clients — neutral enough not to impose, distinctive enough to create atmosphere.
- Inhalation protocols: 2 drops on a tissue or in a personal inhaler for grounding and calming inhalation during anxiety or stress-focused sessions.
- Blending ratios: As a base note, Cedarwood Virginian typically works at 20–30% of a blend by drop count. It acts as a fixative, extending the life of citrus and floral top notes and adding dry, woody depth to resinous blends.
- Natural perfumery: A classic woody base in masculine and unisex natural fragrance work — pairs particularly well with Bergamot, Vetiver, Frankincense, and Cypress.
Safety note: Avoid during pregnancy — Virginian cedarwood is an emmenagogue. Always dilute before skin application. Keep out of reach of children. Not for internal use.
