Roman Chamomile Essential Oil: The Gentlest Oil for Sleep, Anxiety, and Sensitive Skin
If there is one essential oil that embodies the concept of gentle, deep calm, it is Roman chamomile. Its soft, sweet, apple-like scent is immediately soothing — and its therapeutic properties are among the most well-documented in aromatherapy. It is the oil of choice for anxiety, insomnia, and emotional distress, and one of the very few oils considered safe and appropriate for use with children. It is also one of the most effective oils for sensitive, reactive, and inflamed skin.
What is Roman Chamomile Essential Oil?
Roman chamomile essential oil is steam-distilled from the flowers of Anthemis nobilis (also known as Chamaemelum nobile), a low-growing perennial herb native to Western Europe. It is distinct from German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), which has a very different chemical profile and a deep blue colour from its high azulene content. Roman chamomile is pale yellow to clear, with a softer, sweeter, more apple-like scent.
It is one of the most expensive essential oils by volume — the flowers must be harvested by hand, and it takes a large quantity of flowers to produce a small amount of oil. This is why it is commonly sold in diluted form.
Roman Chamomile (D) — Dilute is Roman chamomile pre-diluted in a carrier oil to a workable concentration (typically 5%). This makes it immediately ready to use and far more affordable, while retaining all the therapeutic properties of the pure oil. For most applications, the dilute is the practical choice.
Roman Chamomile (P) — Pure is the undiluted essential oil, for those who want to create their own dilutions or use it in diffuser blends at precise concentrations.
Its primary active compounds include isobutyl angelate and isoamyl angelate — esters that give it its characteristic sweet, fruity scent and its powerful antispasmodic and sedative properties. It also contains chamazulene (in small amounts), which contributes to its anti-inflammatory activity.
The Scent Profile
Roman chamomile has a soft, sweet, warm scent with apple-like, slightly herbaceous, and faintly floral undertones. It is one of the most immediately comforting scents in aromatherapy — gentle, warm, and deeply reassuring. It is a middle note in blends, adding sweetness and calm without heaviness.
Benefits of Roman Chamomile Essential Oil
Sleep and insomnia
Roman chamomile is one of the most effective essential oils for sleep — its high ester content gives it powerful sedative properties that promote the transition into deep, restorative sleep. It is particularly effective for the kind of sleep disruption caused by anxiety, an overactive mind, or emotional distress. A 2017 study found that chamomile aromatherapy significantly improved sleep quality in elderly patients. Diffuse in the bedroom 30–60 minutes before sleep, or apply diluted to the soles of the feet and wrists.
Anxiety and emotional distress
Roman chamomile is one of the most deeply calming oils available — it works on the nervous system at a fundamental level, reducing the physiological markers of anxiety (heart rate, cortisol, muscle tension) while simultaneously promoting a sense of emotional safety and wellbeing. It is particularly effective for the kind of deep, existential anxiety that resists more stimulating interventions, and for the emotional distress of grief, shock, and trauma. Diffuse or apply diluted to the solar plexus and wrists.
Children and babies
Roman chamomile is one of the very few essential oils considered appropriate for use with children and (at very low dilutions) babies. It is widely used for teething discomfort, colic, sleep difficulties, and the emotional distress of childhood — applied diluted to the soles of the feet or diffused in the room. Always use at very low dilutions for children (0.5–1%) and consult a qualified aromatherapist before using with babies under 3 months.
Sensitive and inflamed skin
Roman chamomile has exceptional anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties, making it one of the most effective oils for sensitive, reactive, and inflamed skin. It is widely used for eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, allergic reactions, and the kind of hot, red, irritated skin that reacts badly to most products. Add 1–2 drops of the dilute to an unscented moisturiser or facial oil.
Muscle and joint pain
Roman chamomile’s antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties make it effective for muscle cramps, spasms, and joint pain — particularly the kind of pain associated with tension, stress, and emotional holding. Applied diluted in a massage oil, it helps release the physical manifestation of emotional tension in the body.
Digestive support
Roman chamomile’s antispasmodic properties extend to the digestive system — it is effective for IBS, cramping, bloating, and the kind of nervous stomach that accompanies anxiety and stress. Apply diluted to the abdomen in a clockwise massage.
Headache and migraine
Applied diluted to the temples and back of the neck, Roman chamomile helps ease tension headaches and migraines — particularly those triggered by stress, anxiety, or hormonal fluctuation. It works particularly well combined with lavender and peppermint.
How to Use Roman Chamomile Essential Oil
Diffuser
Add 4–5 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser. Roman chamomile works beautifully alone or as the heart of a calming blend. Ideal for evenings, pre-sleep routines, and any time deep calm is needed.
Pre-Sleep Ritual
Apply the dilute directly to the soles of the feet, wrists, and back of the neck 30 minutes before bed. Combine with diffusing in the bedroom for a comprehensive pre-sleep environment.
Topical Application (skin care)
Add 1–2 drops of the dilute to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil or unscented moisturiser. Apply to inflamed, sensitive, or reactive skin. Particularly effective for eczema, rosacea, and allergic reactions.
Children’s Application
Dilute 1 drop of pure Roman chamomile in 1 tablespoon of carrier oil (0.5% dilution) for children over 2 years. Apply to the soles of the feet for sleep support, or to the abdomen for colic and digestive discomfort. For diffusing, use 1–2 drops maximum in a well-ventilated room.
Anxiety and Emotional Support
Apply the dilute to the solar plexus (the area just below the sternum), wrists, and back of the neck. Breathe slowly and deeply for 60 seconds after application. Repeat as needed throughout the day.
Bath
Add 4–5 drops of the dilute (or 2–3 drops of pure) to a tablespoon of carrier oil or full-fat milk, then add to a warm bath. Deeply restorative for anxiety, emotional distress, and insomnia.

A Note on Quality
Look for Roman chamomile oil that clearly states Anthemis nobilis or Chamaemelum nobile as the botanical name. The oil should be pale yellow to clear — if it is deep blue, it is German chamomile, not Roman. Our guide to choosing quality essential oils explains what to look for.
