Botanical name: Amyris balsamifera | Plant part: Wood & branches | Origin: Jamaica | Extraction: Steam distillation
Amyris Essential Oil — also known as West Indian Sandalwood — is steam distilled from the wood and branches of Amyris balsamifera, a tree native to Haiti and Jamaica with a remarkable botanical history. So rich in natural oils that the local population traditionally burned it as a candle — earning it the name “candlewood” — Amyris delivers a warm, creamy, softly balsamic aroma that is genuinely reminiscent of true Sandalwood, making it a highly valued and more accessible alternative for professional formulators. Its botanical identity remained a mystery until 1886, when microscopic examination of its leaves finally distinguished it from true Sandalwood — a fitting story for an oil of such quiet complexity.
- Aroma profile: Warm, creamy and softly balsamic with a smooth, woody, slightly sweet depth
- Blends well with: Cedarwood, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Patchouli, Rose, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang
- Common applications: Luxury massage blends, natural perfumery, skincare formulations, diffusion, bath oils
- Dilution: Always dilute before topical application — 1–3% in a suitable carrier oil
