Patchouli Essential Oil is distilled from the young leaves of the Pogostemon cablin plant, a member of the mint family, and is known for its deep musky-sweet, earthy, and slightly spicy aroma. Native to Malaysia and India—where it is known as puchaput—the name “patchouli” comes from the Tamil phrase pachchai ilai, meaning “green leaf.” The leaves are traditionally dried and fermented before steam distillation, a process that enriches the oil’s scent and character over time. Widely used in perfumery and fragrance traditions, patchouli has long been valued in Eastern cultures for potpourris and sachets placed among clothing and linens, as well as for its ability to deter insects. Historically, it was used to protect Indian cashmere shawls during transport to Victorian England, where its distinctive scent became closely associated with their authenticity. Patchouli later gained iconic status in the 1960s and 70s in Europe and America, particularly within counterculture movements, and was also commonly used as a natural hair scent and conditioner for dreadlocks.
