Latin Name: Cymbopogon martinii | Plant Part: Grass (aerial parts) | Origin: India | Extraction: Steam Distillation
Palmarosa essential oil is one of aromatherapy's most versatile and underrated florals. Steam-distilled from the tall, fragrant grass Cymbopogon martinii, it carries a soft, rosy-sweet scent that is both uplifting and calming — prized in Ayurvedic tradition, the perfumery trade, and modern aromatherapy alike. With a high geraniol content (typically 75–95%), palmarosa has a natural affinity with the skin, making it as useful in your skincare routine as it is in your diffuser.
Aroma Profile
Floral, rosy, and sweetly herbaceous — lighter and fresher than rose absolute, with a clean, uplifting quality that blends beautifully with citruses, other florals, and resins.
Key Benefits
- Skin care: Supports sebum regulation and hydration; well-suited to oily, combination, and blemish-prone skin
- Emotional balance: Uplifting yet calming; ideal for anxiety, emotional fatigue, and low mood
- Antimicrobial: High geraniol content provides natural antimicrobial and antifungal activity
- Muscle comfort: A pleasant addition to massage blends for easing tension and supporting circulation
How to Use
- Diffusion: 3–5 drops in your diffuser; blends beautifully with lavender, bergamot, and geranium
- Topical: Dilute to 1% for facial use (1 drop per 5 ml carrier oil); up to 2% for body use
- Skin care: Add 1–2 drops to your daily moisturiser, serum, or facial oil
- Bath: Blend 3–4 drops with a dispersant before adding to warm bathwater
- Linen spray: 5–8 drops in 100 ml distilled water for a soft, rosy room mist
Blending Partners
Palmarosa bridges florals, citruses, and resins with ease. It pairs especially well with geranium, rose absolute, ylang ylang, lavender, bergamot FCF, frankincense, and clary sage.
