Essential Oils for Stress and Anxiety: What Works and Why
Stress is an unavoidable part of modern life — but how we respond to it is within our control. Essential oils won’t eliminate the source of your stress, but they can meaningfully support your nervous system’s ability to cope, helping you move from a state of tension to one of greater calm.
The Science Behind Aromatherapy and Stress
When you inhale an essential oil, aromatic molecules travel through the olfactory system directly to the limbic brain — the region responsible for emotion, memory, and the stress response. This is why certain scents can shift your mood almost instantly.
Research supports this. Bergamot has been shown to reduce cortisol levels (the primary stress hormone) in clinical settings. Lavender has demonstrated anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects comparable in some studies to low-dose medication, without the side effects. Frankincense has been shown to activate ion channels in the brain that alleviate anxiety and depression.
The Best Essential Oils for Stress and Anxiety
Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) — One of the most researched oils for anxiety. Its unique combination of citrus brightness and floral depth makes it both uplifting and calming — it lifts low mood without overstimulating. A 2015 clinical trial found bergamot aromatherapy significantly reduced anxiety in patients awaiting surgery. Note: photosensitive — avoid applying to skin before sun exposure.
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) — The most widely studied essential oil for anxiety. Linalool, its primary active compound, has demonstrated measurable effects on the nervous system. Reliable, gentle, and versatile — a cornerstone of any stress-relief toolkit.
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) — Deeply grounding and calming. Frankincense slows the breath and quiets mental chatter, making it particularly effective for anxiety that manifests as racing thoughts or an inability to be present.
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) — Warming, herbaceous, and powerfully calming. Clary sage has been shown to reduce cortisol levels and is particularly effective for stress related to hormonal fluctuations. Avoid during pregnancy.
Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) — Floral and exotic, ylang ylang reduces heart rate and blood pressure — two key physiological markers of the stress response. Use in small amounts as it can be overwhelming; blend with bergamot or lavender.
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) — Floral, balancing, and emotionally stabilising. Geranium is particularly helpful for anxiety that comes with emotional volatility or mood swings. It has a harmonising quality that makes it a wonderful addition to stress blends.
Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) — Earthy and deeply grounding. Vetiver is sometimes called “the oil of tranquillity” — it anchors scattered, anxious energy and promotes a sense of rootedness. Particularly effective for those who feel overwhelmed or ungrounded.
How to Use Essential Oils for Stress Relief
Diffuser
The most effective method for ongoing stress support. Diffuse your chosen oil or blend for 30–60 minutes during stressful periods — at your desk, in the evening, or during a wind-down routine. Bergamot and lavender work beautifully together.
Direct Inhalation
For acute stress or anxiety — a difficult meeting, a moment of overwhelm — add 1–2 drops to a tissue or your palms, cup over your nose, and breathe deeply for 30–60 seconds. This delivers the aromatic compounds quickly and directly.
Topical Application
Dilute 2–3% in a carrier oil and apply to pulse points (wrists, temples, back of neck) or massage into the shoulders and upper back — areas where stress commonly accumulates. A self-massage with a stress-relief blend can be profoundly effective.
Bath
A warm bath with 6–8 drops of essential oil (dispersed in carrier oil or milk) is one of the most effective ways to decompress after a stressful day. The combination of warmth, water, and scent works on multiple levels simultaneously.

A Note on Anxiety
Essential oils can be a valuable support for everyday stress and mild anxiety. However, if you experience persistent, severe, or debilitating anxiety, please speak to your GP. Aromatherapy works best as a complementary tool alongside professional support, not as a replacement for it.
