Crystal Candles Explained: What They Are and How to Use Them
Crystal candles have become one of the most popular candle styles in recent years — and it’s easy to see why. They combine the sensory pleasure of a beautifully scented candle with the visual appeal and symbolic meaning of real gemstones, creating something that feels genuinely special. But what exactly are they, how do they work, and how should you use them? Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is a Crystal Candle?
A crystal candle is a candle — typically a jar, tube, or pillar style — that contains real crystals or gemstones embedded in or placed on top of the wax. As the candle burns down, the crystals are gradually revealed and eventually released from the wax entirely, at which point they can be cleaned and kept.
The crystals used are usually rough or tumbled gemstones — amethyst, rose quartz, clear quartz, green aventurine, and tiger’s eye are among the most common. Each crystal is associated with specific properties and intentions in crystal healing and spiritual practice.
Why Crystals?
In crystal healing — a practice with roots in ancient cultures across the world — different gemstones are believed to carry different energetic properties that can support emotional, spiritual, and physical wellbeing. Whether you approach this literally or simply as a meaningful symbolic framework, the pairing of crystal and candle creates a product that feels intentional and purposeful in a way that a standard candle doesn’t.
Common crystal pairings and their associations:
- Amethyst (purple) — calm, intuition, spiritual awareness, stress relief. Often paired with lavender or chamomile scents.
- Rose Quartz (pink) — love, self-care, compassion, emotional healing. Often paired with rose or jasmine scents.
- Clear Quartz — clarity, amplification, new beginnings, manifestation. A versatile “master crystal” that pairs well with any intention.
- Green Aventurine — luck, abundance, growth, opportunity. Often paired with fresh or herbal scents.
- Tiger’s Eye — confidence, courage, focus, protection. Often paired with warm, grounding scents.
- Black Tourmaline — protection, grounding, banishing negativity.
- Citrine — positivity, energy, success, creativity.
How to Use a Crystal Candle
Before you light it
Take a moment to set an intention. This is optional, but it’s part of what makes crystal candles feel different from a standard candle — the ritual of pausing, holding the candle, and deciding what you’d like to invite into your life or release. This is particularly meaningful if you’re using the candle as part of a meditation, manifestation, or self-care practice.
Burning safely
Crystal candles follow the same safety rules as any other candle:
- Always burn on a heat-resistant surface
- Never leave unattended
- Keep away from draughts, children, and pets
- Trim the wick to around 5mm before each use
- Allow the wax to melt to the edges on the first burn to prevent tunnelling
One additional consideration with crystal candles: as the wax melts and the crystals are released, they may shift position. Never leave a crystal candle burning unattended once the crystals are close to the flame level, as a crystal falling into the melt pool could cause uneven burning or, in rare cases, cracking of a glass container.
The first burn
The first burn is the most important. Allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the container before extinguishing — this prevents tunnelling and ensures an even burn throughout the candle’s life. For a standard jar candle, this typically takes 2–4 hours.
What to Do with the Crystals Afterwards
Once the candle has burned down and the wax has cooled, you can retrieve the crystals. Gently remove any remaining wax (warm water helps), then cleanse the crystals before use. Common cleansing methods include:
- Running water — hold under cool running water for a minute (check first that your crystal is water-safe; some, like selenite, are not)
- Moonlight — leave overnight under the full moon
- Smoke cleansing — pass through incense smoke (white sage, palo santo, or frankincense are traditional choices — see our Incense Guides for more)
- Sound — use a singing bowl or bells
Once cleansed, the crystals can be placed around your home, carried with you, used in meditation, or added to a crystal collection.
